What’s this site for?

The site is designed primarily for people who aren’t sure what to wear to a big occasion. You take pictures of yourself in two different outfits, upload them and wait for the public to vote.

But don’t let yourself be limited. You could put up pictures of two different people and ask who’s better looking. You can put up two sportsmen, two politicians, anything that you have pictures of.

The only proviso is that you don’t upload pornography, advertisements or copyright material. So keep it clean and legal.

When I tried to upload pictures it told me I had to vote ten times, I already had voted ten times. What's going on?

No, no, no. You've misunderstood. AFTER you've uploaded your pictures we require you to vote on ten other pairs. All you do is click OK. It will take a few moments for your pictures to upload. Then we'll automatically take you back to the main page. You vote ten times and hey presto, your pictures are up on the site.

Why do I have to vote ten times before my pictures go on line?

That’s to ensure that every pair of pictures gets voted on. It means everyone’s pictures quickly get a minimum of ten votes each.

How do I send the pictures to my friends?

Go to Find Your Results and enter the name of your search that you gave when you uploaded. Your pictures should pop up underneath. Now click on them and you’ll be shown a normal voting page with them on. The url in the address bar in your browser will be unique to these pictures. Copy out into an e-mail and send it to all your friends.

I can’t find my pictures, what’s going on?

It’s just possible that they have been flagged as inappropriate. When someone reports a picture to us we suspend it immediately until it’s been checked and approved by one of our staff. This usually takes a few hours. If the picture is all right – not offensive or pornographic or spam – it will be put back onto the site. We know that this system can be annoying, but there are a lot of nasty people on the internet and we don’t want thisonethatone.com displaying pictures that shouldn’t be on public view.

I need my results quick, how long does it take?

The pictures that you see don’t come up randomly, there’s a massive bias towards the most recent uploads. Of course it depends on how many people are using the site at any given time, but you ought to have a good idea pretty quickly. We reckon that once 20 or so votes are in the proportions won't change TOO much. Although pictures can happily end up with over a thousand votes and sometimes there are late swings. The pictures are kept on the site for two months, but they will appear less and less often as time goes by.

What if there’s a bias towards one side, maybe people will be more likely to click on the left-hand picture?

It doesn’t matter, our system alternates your pictures between left and right to avoid just that problem.

When I search for my results I get lots of other pictures as well, why’s that?

We have a system that allows you to misspell your search. So if you can’t remember whether you wrote “what T-shirt” or “which teeshirt” we’ll try and give you both options. This means that you’ll see several other people's searches, but rather that than lose your results entirely.

I uploaded some pictures, now I've changed my mind! I want to take them down. What can I do?

Just flag them as inappropriate. In the information box say that you were the one who uploaded them in the first place and they'll be taken down.

I'm kinda crazy. I want to upload the same picture over and over again! Or perhaps I'll just upload two identical pictures with no choice between them! That's just the kinda guy I am! Nuts and lonely!

We will take them down without a flicker of remorse or compunction.

What does the "in tune with the world" thing mean?

It's a measure of how many times you agree with the majority opinion.

I don't really understand how to upload pictures. I went to the upload page and there were a lot of boxes that, quite frankly, frightened me.

Well, you'll need to have the two pictures saved on your computer. Got that? Now go to the upload page. Click browse and that lets you go through your computer to the place where you saved the first picture. You double click on the first picture and then repeat the same process for the second.

Pick the occassion you're talking about (there's an "Other" option if it's not for anything in particular). Give the search a name (this won't show up, but means you can find your results). Then, if you like, you can give us your e-mail address

The last little bit is the captcha. That's where you have to read two words. We know it's a hassle, but otherwise some imp could program his computer to load up 3,000 pictures a second a crash the site. The point of a captcha is to check that you're human.

What are you going to do with my e-mail address, are you going to sell it to one of those spammers, or STEAL MY IDENTITY?

We don't do anything with your e-mail address except use it to send you your results. That's it. We don't want your identity. Your identity isn't as good as ours.
